Jersey Mike’s Has Immediate

Impact in Washington County

New Restaurant Partners with Boys & Girls Club

Ordering a sub Mike's Way™ may soon be a common phrase heard in Washington County as Jersey Mike’s Subs is now serving its authentic sub sandwiches and wraps out of its location on Garland Groh Boulevard.

Owners Pat and Beth Provost said when they opened the new restaurant they wanted to establish a partnership with the local community.  After joining the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce, the couple attended a Boys & Girls Club event and received a tour of the local youth development agency and a true partnership was established.

“Wow is just about the only word I can use to describe how our relationship with Jersey Mike’s has evolved,” said Buck Browning, director of development for the Boys & Girls Club.  “They have been awesome to us, not only investing financially in our programs but also getting involved by hiring our teens, providing cookies and snacks for our club members, and even helping us establish a Facebook page.”

During the restaurant’s opening week Beth and Pat offered free subs to the community in exchange for a $1 donation to the Boys & Girls Club.  The program was so successful Jersey Mike’s recently provided a check in the amount of $2,065.00 to the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County.

Jersey Mike’s originally opened in Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956 serving primarily summer beachgoers.  As the restaurant’s popularity grew, vacationers to the Jersey Shore shared their desire to have its special style of sandwiches all year round so franchise opportunities were born.  .  The authentic taste – called served Mike's Way™ with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, oil, vinegar and spices – is now available nationwide with more than 500 Jersey Mike’s locations.

KELLER-WILLIAMS HELPS THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

The local realtor and its partners took the day off from selling real estate and spent the day improving real estate!  Close to 30 individuals associated with Keller-Williams Realty gave of their time and talents to work at the Boys & Girls Club located on Pennsylvania Avenue.  The volunteers helped to seal the outer walls of the club (applying a sealent to prevent moisture from entering the building), cleaned windows and rooms within the facility, and spent time helping club members with homework and other activities.  Partners associated with Keller-Williams who assisted in the project included bank officials, contractors, and real estate agents.  A special thank you to all who helped!

21st Annual Steak & Burger Dinner Raises Over $30,000.00 for Boys & Girls Club

Close to 400 people enjoyed performances by Boys & Girls Club members at the Annual Steak & Burger Dinner.  17-year old Merceydes Bowser, a junior at the Technical High School, inspired those in attendance as she spoke about earning the prestigous Andrew Hoffman Youth of the Year Scholarship Award.  Bowser is the first recipient of the award since it was renamed in honor of Andy Hoffman, who has volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club since the early 1970's.  The A Step 2 Success foundation is providing Merceydes a $1,000.00 scholarship upon her graduation from high school.  Below, Merceydes is joined by Andy Hoffman, Torben Aarsand of the A Step 2 Success Foundation, and Jim Deaner, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club.

Rick Dempsey, above right, a former Oriole catcher and current broadcaster, was the keynote speaker at the Boys & Girls Club's 21st Annual Steak & Burger Dinner on April 14 at Hager Hall.  The Boys & Girls Club featured autograph items from Dempsey in its silent auction which raised over $5,000 this year.  Club Member Alex Moore sang the National Anthem (below left) to a standing ovation.  Club members from Elgin Station Unit helped escort guests to their tables (below right).

Rural Boys & Girls Clubs to Continue Youth Development Programs

The Boys & Girls Club programs in Hancock and Cascade will continue providing youth development opportunities for local children.  In September the Washington County Commissioners voted to support the Washington County Community Partnership for Children & Families recommendation to fund the Boys & Girls Club programs through a state supported grant initiative.  The new program will continue services for children through afterschool programs at Cascade Elementary School and at the Hancock Middle/Senior High School.  In addition, the funding initiative will provide the resources to open a new Boys & Girls Club extension in Williamsport.
